Bringing a television into the home

Question: Some people, of whom we know good, bring televisions into their homes, and [by doing so] they say they do not wish to be accused of being excessive/immoderate. So what is your advice?

Response: Abstaining from television is not being excessive, rather it is taking precautions for the [safety of one’s] religion, family and children. So it is guarding against harmful means because its presence [in the home] is a cause of harm to the children and women, and harmful even to the man of the house.

Who can [possibly] guarantee himself [safe] from [any] fitnah?!

So, the more a person can protect himself from the causes of fitnah, then that is best for him now and in the future; and abstaining from television is not from excessiveness, rather it is from protecting [oneself from the means to fitnah].
