Delivering short sermons of advice and reminders

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape 1, Question No.11

Question: We are students of knowledge, and we go to some of the masaajid and deliver short sermons of advice about death and other matters. However, some of the students of knowledge rebuke us and say [doing] this is an innovation because it is from storytelling. So what are the guidelines [in delivering short sermons in the masaajid]?

Response: All Praise is due to Allaah [as] we have a whole ministry for da’wah and guidance; so it is imperative that you get a permit from them to deliver short sermons of advice and reminders. [So] get a permit from the ministry, and [be mindful that] it is only issued to those who are qualified; it is not issued except to those who are competent for this [type of work].
