Engaging in the remembrance of Allaah

Question: Is it permissible to engage in the remembrance of Allaah whilst not in a state of wudhoo – such as [when uttering the] takbeer [الله أكبر], tahleel [لا إله إلا الله] and tahmeed [الحمد لله], as well as sending prayers and salutations upon the Messenger ﷺ?

Response: It is permissible to engage in the remembrance of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) whilst not in a state of wudhoo, as this has been [authentically] established in the hadeeth of ‘Aa.ishah (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhaa) who said:

‘The Prophet ﷺ would engage in the remembrance of Allaah in all circumstances’ – transmitted by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim

[Regarding] engaging in the remembrance [of Allaah], then no condition has been stipulated to necessitate one doing so be in a state of wudhoo. However, that which is best is not to do so unless one is in a state of wudhoo – however, this is not obligatory. Even if one was in a state of janaabah (major sexual impurity), then it is permissible to engage in the remembrance of Allaah – except for reading the Qur.aan. Indeed the Qur.aan must not be read whilst in a state of janaabah until after having had a ghusl (bath or shower). This is based upon the hadeeth of ‘Alee ibn Abee Taalib (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhu) who said:

‘The Prophet ﷺ used to teach the Qur.aan and he never prevented anyone from learning it except those who were in a state of janaabah’ – transmitted by at-Tirmidhee
