Loving and hating for the Sake of Allaah

Question: What is the meaning of love for the Sake of Allaah, and hate for the Sake of Allaah?

Response: It means that you love a person, and you don’t love that person other than for the Sake of Allaah; [so] you don’t love him because he gives you [some] money, or because he is of some worldly benefit, rather, you love him because he is a righteous man.

And hate for the Sake of Allaah [is that] you don’t hate him because he didn’t give you anything, but you hate him because he is an enemy of Allaah, and that he opposes obedience to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aalaa – you should hate him because of that. Don’t hate him because he didn’t give you anything, or because there is animosity – or something similar – between the two of you.
