Question: Is it correct to recite the Qur.aan whilst I am lying down on the bed, and if it is not then what is the explanation of the noble verse:

{Those who remember Allaah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides}, soorah Aal-‘Imraan, aayah 191

Response: There is no harm in the one lying down reciting the Qur.aan, whether that be lying down on the bed or on the floor, there is no harm in that; So a person can recite the Qur.aan in any way possible, whether it be standing, sitting or lying, and whether it be in a state of wudhoo or in a state of minor impurity [only] if the recitation is from memory. As for the recitation from the mus.haf, then it is not permissible for the one in a state of [minor] impurity to touch the mus.haf until he has made wudhoo.

All in all, there is no prohibition in reciting the Qur.aan in any way possible so long as the person is not in a state of sexual impurity. So if he is in a state of sexual impurity then it is prohibited for him to recite the Qur.aan until he has taken the ritual bath (ghusl). And likewise, the state of menses or postpartum bleeding prohibits the woman from reciting the Qur.aan unless the situation necessitates such as (her) fear of forgetting [what she has memorsied].
