an-Nawawee’s explanation of [Saheeh] Muslim…I have read* it more than 60 times.
Keeping away from the hadeeth of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is the root of tribulation! [there was a time when] the student of knowledge would read the [collection of] six books of hadeeth, the Muwatta, and then progress to reading the masaaneed and more.
Shaykh Ihsaan Ilaahee Zaheer informed me about our Shaykh, Muhammad al-Gondalwi that he would not read the newspapers or magazines – so as not to [inadvertantly] memorise them! That is because if he were to read anything, he was [instantly] able to memorise it.
In this world, Abu Daawood was created for [the knowledge of] hadeeth, and [as] for the Hereafter, [he was created] for Paradise.
I did not put [pen to paper and record] any hadeeth in my book “Saheeh [al-Bukhaaree]” except that I washed before [doing so], and then prayed two rak’ahs.
The chain of narration is the weapon of the believer, so if he does not have a weapon, with what will he then fight?
