Question: This is a question in which the questioner asks: “What are the Sacred Months, and has anything been mentioned regarding the virtues of the month of Rajab?”
Response: The Sacred Months are Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
Three of them are consecutive – Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram – and one is separate, which is the month of Rajab.
These are mentioned in the words of Allaah ﷻ:
They are these four [Sacred] Months.
And His saying, ﴾so do not wrong yourselves during them﴿ is an indication that committing sins during these Sacred Months is a greater matter than committing them in other months.
And the scholars have differed [in opinion] over whether initiating fighting during the Sacred Months has been abrogated or whether it remains in effect and was not abrogated.
And the most correct opinion is that it has not been abrogated, as there is no clear evidence indicating abrogation.
As for what is reported of the Prophet ﷺ fighting during some of the Sacred Months, that was only defensive fighting and not an initiation [of combat].
Therefore, the most apparent view held by many of the researchers from amongst the scholars is that it was not abrogated, and that it is not permissible to initiate fighting during the Sacred Months.
As for the month of Rajab, it is indeed one of the four Sacred Months, but nothing has been reported in the texts to single it out with any special virtue.
And al-Haafith Ibn Hajar authored a treatise entitled[1]:
– and he concluded that nothing has been reported, and that nothing authentic has been preserved from the Prophet ﷺ concerning singling out the month of Rajab.
Therefore, the month of Rajab is not to be singled out for any acts of worship.
It is not to be singled out for ‘umrah – this is what some refer to as العمرة الرجبية – which has no basis.
And nor is it to be singled out for fasting, prayer, or any act of worship.
Rather, the month of Rajab – in acts of worship – is like any other [month], and is not distinguished by any specific acts of worship.
And whoever singles out the month of Rajab with any specific act of worship is required to provide evidence [for doing so]; otherwise, his action is considered an innovation (bid’ah), and this falls under the category of an additional innovative practice.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
However, the month of Rajab is indeed one of the four Sacred Months.
