Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez Aal ash-Shaykh said:
O Muslim, and indeed every every individual in this world, know that your existence here is temporary, and determined by a time known only to Him who decrees it.
Allaah ﷻ says:
{And We did not grant to any man before you eternity [on earth]; so if you die – would they be eternal? Every soul will taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.} – al-Qur.aan 21:34-35[and Allaah ﷻ says:]
{Everyone upon it [i.e., the earth] will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.} – al-Qur.aan 55:26-27This life guarantees no one’s permanence; rather, every living being’s destiny is death.
Allaah ﷻ said to Aadam ﷺ – when He sent him down to Earth:
{And for you on Earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time.} – al-Qur.aan 7:24So whoever knows that his life is predetermined by a time known to his Lord, and decreed by Him, will prepare for what comes after death, and get ready for what comes after death, and knows that if he neglects [the life of] this world, wastes it, or squanders it, will then begin the Day of Resurrection [with regret]:
{Lest a soul should say, “Oh, [how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allaah and that I was among the mockers.”} – al-Qur.aan: 39:56{Or [lest] it say, “If only Allaah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous.”} – al-Qur.aan: 39:57{Or [lest] it say when it sees the punishment, “If only I had another turn so I could be among the doers of good.”} – al-Qur.aan: 39:58{If you could but see when they will be made to stand before their Lord. He will say, “Is this not the truth?” They will say, “Yes, by our Lord.”} – al-Qur.aan: 6:30At that moment, they will wish they could return to the world to correct their ways.
Allaah ﷻ says about them:
{And they will say, “If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze.”} – al-Qur.aan: 67:10-11They wish to be returned to the world so they might correct their ways and improve their behaviour, but their regret will not benefit them, nor will it avail them anything, for the opportunity of life has passed.
So a Muslim’s life is precious to him, not something cheap to be wasted on what is useless.
It is indeed precious to him because he knows it is the foundation of his life after death – either a source of good that brings him comfort, or a source of misery, distress, and eternal hardship in the Hereafter.
