al-Ameen and al-Ma.moon travelled to ‘Abdullaah ibn Idrees who narrated a hundred hadeeth to them. al-Ma.moon then said

Knowledge which is not spoken with
Knowledge which is not spoken with, is like treasure which is not spent.
Dictated 20,000 hadeeth to us from memory
‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Mahdee dictated 20,000 hadeeth to us from memory.
I have not memorised anything and then forgotten it
I have not heard anything except that I have memorised it, and I have not memorised anything and then forgotten it.
Strength of memory
My heart has never stored (memorised) anything and then left me.
Beautify knowledge
Beautify knowledge [by acting in accordance to it], and do not beautify yourself with it.
The most amazing of those who memorised in our time
From amongst the most amazing of those who memorised [knowledge] in our time was Ibn Taymiyyah. He would read a book only once and it would be etched in his mind.
When his house burnt down
Abu ‘Amr al-‘Alaa’s home was full of books. So when his house burnt down, all that we took from him (in terms of knowledge) thereafter until he died was from his memory.
I know which book it is in
I have in my house [something] I wrote 50 years [ago] and have not read it since I [first] wrote it. Certainly, I know which book it is in, [and] which page it is on [and] which line it is on
I narrated 50,000 hadeeth from memory
When Abu ‘Abdullaah ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Ahmad al-Khuttootee (d. 335AH) arrived in al-Basrah (Iraq), he had no books with him. He remained in al-Basrah for some months until his books arrived.
