Name and Lineage

He is Sa’d ibn Naasir ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Ibraaheem ibn Hamad ibn Muhammad ash-Shathree, his family tracing its lineage back to the tribe of Qahtaan.

His Pursuit of Knowledge

  • Dr. Sa’d ibn Naasir ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez Abu Habeeb ash-Shathree was raised in a household of knowledge and religion, handed down from father to grandfather. From his earliest years he was devoted to the pursuit of the Sharee’ah sciences and set his course towards them, continuing thus until he completed his university studies at the Faculty of Sharee’ah in Riyadh, whereupon he was selected as a teaching assistant there.
  • His aspiration then turned to postgraduate study, and he submitted his Master’s thesis entitled at-Tafreeq bayn al-Usool wal-Furoo’ (Distinguishing Between the Fundamentals and the Subsidiary Matters). He thereafter attained the degree of Doctorate in 1417AH, presenting a dissertation entitled al-Qat’ wadh-Dhann ‘ind al-Usooliyyeen (Certainty and Probability According to the Scholars of Usool).
  • He received scholarly commendations (tazkiyaat) from a great many scholars, such as Shaykh Ibn Baaz, Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymeen, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ar-Raajihee, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez Aal ash-Shaykh, Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan, Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-Barraak and others.
  • He obtained numerous scholarly licences (ijaazaat) in the narration of the books of the Sunnah from a number of scholars, such as Shaykh ‘Abdullaah al-‘Aqeel.

The Shaykh studied at the hands of a number of eminent scholars and shaykhs, and was clearly influenced by them. Among the most prominent of them were:

  • His Eminence Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz – may Allaah have mercy upon him.
  • His Eminence Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn ‘Abdullaah Aal ash-Shaykh, Grand Muftee of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Head of the Council of Senior Scholars and President-General of the Department of Scholarly Research and Verdicts.
  • The noble Shaykh Saalih al-Atram.
  • The noble Shaykh Ahmad ibn ‘Alee Seer al-Mubaarakee, member of the Council of Senior Scholars.
  • The Shaykh and scholar of usool ‘Abdullaah ibn Ghudayyaan – may Allaah have mercy upon him – under whom he studied usool al-fiqh and the legal maxims (al-qawaa’id al-fiqhiyyah).
  • His father, Shaykh Naasir ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Muhammad ash-Shathree.

His Scholarly Output

The Shaykh – may Allaah preserve him – has a great many books and research papers which have enriched the scholarly libraries in particular and the Islaamic libraries in general. He has likewise taken part in a number of the intensive summer study courses held in some of the masaajid, in addition to his two theses for the Master’s and the Doctorate. His Scholarly Activities

The Shaykh has ranged widely across many fields of knowledge, moving between teaching, supervising and examining academic theses, peer-reviewing, and taking part in conferences, in addition to a great many media appearances, lessons and lectures. Among these activities are:

  1. Teaching at Imaam University the courses of usool al-fiqh, the objectives of the Sharee’ah and the legal maxims, in the Faculties of Sharee’ah, Usool ad-Deen and Da’wah.
  2. Teaching at King Sa’ood University: the sources of the rulings, family fiqh, financial transactions, the legal maxims, inheritance, bequests and endowments, and the fiqh of criminal offences.
  3. Teaching at Knowledge International University: an introduction to the sciences of hadeeth, the fiqh of acts of worship, family fiqh, the fiqh of jihaad and foodstuffs, the fiqh of newly-arising issues, the principles of tafseer, and juristic tafseer.
  4. Teaching at Naayif Arab University for Security Sciences: the judiciary and discretionary punishment (ta’zeer).
  5. Teaching at the Islaamic University of al-Madeenah: usool, the derivation of subsidiary rulings, and the points of distinction (al-furooq).
  6. Supervising and examining academic theses at numerous universities.
  7. Delivering lessons, public lectures and intensive study courses.
  8. Peer-reviewing academic research for conferences and academic journals, and research submitted for academic promotion.
  9. Media participation on numerous television channels and radio stations, and in newspapers and magazines.
