Learn to Read Arabic for Beginners
This guide is designed to help beginners learn to read Arabic, covering the fundamentals of the Arabic script before a student begins the main Madeenah Lessons in Arabic Language course.
The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 letters, written and read from right to left, unlike English. Most letters connect to the ones beside them within a word, and a single letter can take a slightly different shape depending on whether it appears at the start, middle, or end of a word, or on its own. Recognising these connected forms, alongside the short vowel marks used to indicate pronunciation, is one of the first hurdles for anyone new to the language.
Getting comfortable with reading the script itself, before tackling vocabulary and grammar, makes the transition into a structured course far smoother. Students who are already confident reading Arabic script may prefer to begin directly with Book 1 of the Madeenah series, while those newer to the language will likely benefit from working through this guide first.

Once comfortable with reading, students may also find the Arabic writing practice book useful for building confidence in forming the letters by hand. All resources are available via marabic.com.
