Questioner: May Allaah reward you with good, our Shaykh. The first question says: In a few days, the month of Ramadhaan will be upon us, so do you have any guidance for your children (students) regarding preparing for it?
Shaykh: Peace be upon you, and the Mercy of Allaah and His Blessings.
Questioner: And upon you be peace.
Shaykh: All praise is due to Allaah [alone], and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all of his companions.
It is not hidden from any Muslim man and Muslim woman the status of this month in the religion of Islaam.
Rather, everyone knows that it is the fourth pillar – and that it is an individual obligation upon every Muslim male and Muslim female.
However, some people may be negligent or easygoing regarding what a Muslim ought to be upon in this month – namely, taking the initiative to perform the obligatory deeds.
And the greatest of these is Tawheed – sincerity in religion for [the Sake of] Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He – followed by all other acts of obedience, from [the] obligatory [deeds] and [the] recommended [deeds].
And the greatest matter after tawheed is maintaining the five [daily] prayers, at their prescribed times.
Likewise, avoiding what Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He, has forbidden. And the greatest of what Allaah has forbidden is Shirk, followed by all other sins from the minor and major, and from among them innovations [in the religion].
And what is intended is that the Muslim should protect himself, and strive [against his soul] toward what Allaah loves and is pleased with, while avoiding what earns His displeasure and wrath.
And he should occupy his time with what is most beneficial for him in his religion and his worldly life.
This is what is obligatory upon every Muslim man and Muslim woman.
And he should seize [the opportunity of] this month by being diligent in reciting the Book of Allaah, and to increase in voluntary acts of worship, such as prayer, and charity, and maintaining ties of kinship, and visiting the sick.
While these matters are required and commanded with throughout one’s entire life – during all the days and the nights – they are further emphasised in the month of Ramadhaan due to the sanctity of this month and its great status with Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He.
For Allaah has not obligated fasting except for specifc reasons; and Ramadhaan is obligatory as an individual duty upon every Muslim male and Muslim female – according to what the jurists have mentioned regarding the conditions of fasting.
As for other than it, it is not obligatory except for specific reasons, such as a vow or an expiation.
