“I am Salafi”

Question: [O] noble Shaykh, may Allaah grant you success. He (the questioner) says: Some of the students of knowledge say that it is not appropriate for anyone to say:

“I am Salafi”

– because this is [a form of] self-praise. So is what they say [correct]?

Response: If he says this out of self-praise, then this is not permissible.

Yes.

However, if he says it by way of clarification, because he is amongst differing parties and groups and he [wants/needs to] disassociate himself from them – and says:

“I am Salafi. I am upon the methodology of the Pious Predecessors (as-Salaf as-Saalih)”

– by way of disassociation [from falsehood], then this is good.

Yes.
