Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
[As for] the reason [for depression or distress, then] I cannot know, because the causes of depression and distress are varied.
However, there is one thing that can benefit a person, and that is to recite what has been reported in the Sunnah – Ahmad no.1462, at-Tirmidhee no.3505, an-Nasaa.ee no.10417, Saheeh al-Jaami’ no.3383, and Saheeh at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb no.1826:
«There is no god but You; glory be to You! Indeed I was among the wrongdoers.»
This is one [such] supplication.
The second [supplication] is to recite [what has been reported in] the hadeeth of Ibn Mas’ood رضي الله عنه – Ahmad no.3712, and Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan no.972:
«O Allaah, I am Your servant, son of Your male servant, and son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept with Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Great Qur.aan the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow, and the reliever of my distress and grief.»
This is from among the effective and beneficial supplications.
And the more a person engages in the remembrance of Allaah, the more their worries and sorrows are lifted, as Allaah ﷻ says:
{Verily, in the remembrance of Allaah do hearts find comfort.} – ar-Ra’d 013:028A person should also increase [in reciting] the authentic daily supplications reported from the Prophet ﷺ – in the morning and the evening.
And [know that] what harms the people the most in these matters is heedlessness of the remembrance of Allaah and [neglecting] the legislated supplications.
Yes.
May Allaah reward you.
