Being preoccupied with social media

Shaykh Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh said:

Being preoccupied with social media sites, constantly wanting to know what this person said or that person said, or watching the news four or five times a day – this is a waste.

A waste of time, a waste of effort, a waste of your future, and there’s no benefit in it.

[Only] take an amount; from these things, take only as much as is the need.

But getting carried away by them is harmful – it’s a waste of life, a waste of one’s life; it affects you.

The first way it affects you is subconsciously. You will start to experience depression – a natural consequence – because you went toward something that isn’t good. You will experience depression, you will experience tightness in your chest, you will experience no peace in your prayer, and more.

That is why there has to be a balance – a balance in how much you engage with people and in knowing what’s going on around you.

Therefore, there must be a balance – a balance in what you need in terms of connecting with people and knowing what is going on with them [and around you].

These days, people using social media are like those in the past who used to go from gathering to gathering asking, “What [news] do you have?” and leave that house asking, “What [news] do you have?”, “What happened?” and go to another house [and so on].

They used to criticise those kinds of people – those who would go around just to hear other people’s news.

What concern is it of yours? Take only what you need in life. Do not seek out these platforms and accounts to know what people said – [especially] that which does not concern you.

I mean, do not be excessive in it. Take only a little – just enough to keep you aware of [the situation] that concerns your life and so you are not out of touch with what you need to know of the people’s situations – yes, but only in moderation.

As for getting carried away by these things, it is very harmful to the da’wah and the daa’ee (preacher).
