Questioner: Does the night of al-Israa wal-Mi’raaj have a special virtue that requires a specific type of worship?

Response: It has no special virtue, and nothing has been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ nor from his companions concerning it.

And [note that] more than ten years passed for the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ after al-Israa took place, and [yet] he did not celebrate it, and nor did his companions [celebrate it] during his lifetime or after his time. Therefore, celebrating it is an innovation that has no basis.

Even if the exact date were known – though it is actually unknown and uncertain – however, if it were known it is [still] not permissible to celebrate it – because it is contrary to what has been authentically reported from the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ and his companions.

And He ﷺ said:

«Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that which is not from it, will have it rejected.» Its authenticity is agreed upon.

And Muslim also recorded it in his Saheeh with the wording:

«Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected.»

[Furthermore, it is recorded] in the Saheeh from the hadeeth of Jaabir رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ used to say in the khutbah – the Jumu’ah khutbah:

«To proceed: Indeed, the best of speech is the Book of Allaah, and the best of guidance is the Guidance of Muhammad ﷺ – and the most evil of affairs are the newly invented ones, and every innovation is misguidance.»
