Shaykh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhaylee said:

And if a person looks at the flaw of his companion or associate, he should not look at the flaw alone, unless he intends to rectify it. For there is no human being who does not have [both] flaws and virtues.

Therefore, if you wish to look at your companion, do not look at his flaw in isolation, but when you remember his flaw, remind yourself of his virtues.

A person should only look at a flaw itself if he intends to rectify it and wants to sincerely advise his companion.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«Whoever conceals [the flaws of] a Muslim, Allaah will conceal [for] him [his flaws] on the Day of Resurrection.» – reported by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim

And in a narration [reported] by Muslim:

«Whoever conceals [the flaws of] a Muslim, Allaah will conceal [for] him [his flaws] in this world and the Hereafter.»

So, whoever conceals [the flaws of] a Muslim – even if he is far away – is promised that Allaah will conceal [for] him [his flaws] in this world and the Hereafter.

And in the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه the Prophet ﷺ said:

«No servant conceals [the flaws of] another servant in this world except that Allaah will conceal [for] him [his flaws] on the Day of Resurrection.» – reported by Muslim in his Saheeh

Imaam Ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

«Whoever conceals [the flaws of] a Muslim»
– “meaning he hid and covered his flaw”

– and hiding is for that which exists.

The Shaykh said:

“And from this is a curtain [ ستارة ] which hides and covers the thing. And that which is intended is that:
«Whoever conceals [the flaws of] a Muslim»
– who committed something blameworthy – whether in terms of integrity [ مروءة ], or character, or religion and deeds –
«Allaah will conceal [for] him [his flaws] in this world and the Hereafter».”
