Question: What is the ruling on singling out the month of Rajab for specific types of worship, such as fasting, night prayers, and Zakaah? [And] may Allaah protect and preserve you.

Response: No authentic hadeeth has been narrated regarding this.

It (Rajab) is [simply] one of the Sacred Months.

{Indeed, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months…of these, four are sacred.} – at-Towbah 9:36

The Prophet ﷺ clarified what these four [months] are. The Qur.aan did not explicitly name the Sacred Months, but the one who clarified on behalf of Allaah – [was] Muhammad ﷺ – [who] clarified that.

He mentioned that the Sacred Months are Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.

He ﷺ said:

«three are consecutive»

– and he listed them as:

«Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram»

– and then said:

«…and Rajab Mudar[1], which is between Jumaada [al-Aakhirah] and Sha’baan.» – Saheeh al-Bukhaaree no.4662

These are the Sacred Months, and no authentic hadeeth has been narrated specifying them with any particular [religious] deed just because they are Sacred Months.

And the strongest [proof] I know of is that it was narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ was seen fasting extensively in Sha’baan – as mentioned in the hadeeth of ‘Aa.ishah – [where] he said:

«That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadhaan.» – an-Nasaa.ee no.23578

And the scholars have authored books [about this]; among them al-Haafith Ibn Hajar has a book concerning the month of Rajab, entitled:

العجب فيما جاء في شهر رجب

[1] Named after the tribe of Mudar as they used to respect this month.
