The truth is that a happy life is not [attained] with an abundance of wealth, nor an abundance of sustenance, nor superficially nice appearances – which in reality are not-so-nice.

Positive determination
Whoever does not possess a determination for [anything] other than [fulfilling the desires of] his stomach and his private parts, then he is considered from amongst the beasts.
From the causes of worry, sadness and sorrow
Indeed, worry, sadness and sorrow occur from two directions: One of them is a desire for the world and pursuit for it, and the second is a deficiency in righteous deeds and worship.
A caution against books of the people of desires and innovations
I asked Abu ‘Abdillaah – meaning Ahmad ibn Hanbal – about al-Karaabeesee and what he came with. So he had a look of anger on his face, and said
His heart is empty of the love of Allaah
So if you see a man whose taste and desire is for listening to verses [of poetry] rather than verses [of the Qur.aan], and for listening to music rather than the Qur.aan – then this is the strongest…
Regarding the people of innovations
Katheer ibn Ziyaad رحمه الله said [about the people of innovations]: ‘It is said about the people of whims and desires, that no respect nor honour is to be extended to them.’
The benefits of hunger
Hunger cleanses the mind and kills the desires, and it is a cause for attaining deeper knowledge.
The desire for leadership
The one from whom you smelt the odour [for the desire] of leadership will not be successful.
Three essential characteristics
You will not be a scholar until you possess three characteristics.
The sweetness of worship
You will not find (experience) the sweetness of worship until you place a barrier between you and your desires.
