Shaykh Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh said:
Do not beautify sin within yourself.
You look, then look again, and again, and again until the heart becomes corrupted.
You listen, then listen again, and again, and again until the heart becomes corrupted.
You gossip and backbite, and talk, and talk until the heart becomes corrupted.
For indeed, the servant goes through states with sin: at first it seems easy, but in the end he falls into its consequences.
This is why looking, for example, is forbidden.
Why?
Because looking is a means that leads to the greater sin, which is adultery.
Because one thing follows another, and another follows that, until the greater sin is committed – and we seek refuge with Allaah.
He ﷺ said:
«Do not follow a glance with another glance. Verily, you are excused for the first one, but not for the second.» – at-Tirmidhee no.2777, and classified by al-Albaanee as Hasan.Meaning, the second look counts against you, not for you. So what about one who persists in looking, again and again, without fearing that the heart may be turned?
If you are afflicted, then increase in seeking forgiveness, increase in turning back [to Allaah] in repentance, [and] ask your Lord for the righteousness of the heart and the righteousness of the limbs.
For indeed, in that lies goodness for you both in this world and in the Hereafter.
