In the biography of the Khaleefah, ‘Abdul-Malik ibn Marwaan, [it states]: He delivered an eloquent khutbah, and then [abruptly] stopped and began weeping profusely. Then, he said

For every thing there is a sign
For every thing there is a sign, and the sign of failure is to abandon crying [out of the fear of Allaah].
Tears falling on the mat during prayer
I used to hear the tears of Sa’eed ibn ‘Abdil-’Azeez falling on the mat whilst [he was] in prayer.
Crying because of the fear of Allaah
When Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir رحمه الله wept, he would wipe his tears over his face and beard, saying
When the sins decrease
[Regarding] the heart, when it’s sins decrease, it’s tears will hasten.
