Question: May Allaah reward you. He says that if the [day of] ‘Eed coincides with a Friday, what is the ruling on praying the Jumu’ah [prayer] for someone who prayed the ‘Eed [prayer]?

Response: The Prophet ﷺ encountered an ‘Eed that fell on a Friday. Then he said to the people – after he prayed the ‘Eed prayer [on that] Friday –

«We will be performing the Jumu’ah [prayer]. Whoever wishes to pray the Jumu’ah [prayer] with us may do so, and whoever wants to be excused, there is no blame upon him.»

However, is it permissible for him to leave the Zhuhr prayer altogether, or should he just skip the Jumu’ah [prayer] and pray Zhuhr instead?

There is a difference of opinion among the people of knowledge, but the preponderant view is that it is to be prayed as Zhuhr,

This is because Allaah has obligated us to perform five prayers daily, and from them is the Zhuhr prayer. From them is the Zhuhr prayer.

Rather, the concession granted to us on Friday is that if we have prayed the ‘Eed prayer, [we are not required to attend the Jumu‘ah prayer.]

People may then wish to go out on this day of ‘Eed [and celebrate] and not have to wait around for the Jumu‘ah [prayer to be held] and then pray with the people.
