Question: Is the takbeer on ‘Eed al-Fitr and ‘Eed al-Adhaa after the prayer – [to be] done in congregation or individually?

And what is the legislated wording that has been mentioned for the takbeer?

Response: The takbeer [begins] on the night preceding ‘Eed al-Fitr until the arrival of the imaam [for the ‘Eed prayer], and its wording is to say:

الله أكبر الله أكبر
لا إله إلا الله
و الله أكبر الله أكبر
و لله الحمد

…or to say:

الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر
لا إله إلا الله
و الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر
و لله الحمد

…or to say:

الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر
لا إله إلا الله
الله أكبر الله أكبر
و لله الحمد

The issue regarding this is wide.

And it begins on ‘Eed al-Fitr as I said, from sunset the night [before] of ‘Eed until the arrival of the imaam [for the ‘Eed prayer].

As for ‘Eed al-Adhaa, then the takbeer [begins] from the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah until [Maghrib on] the final day of tashreeq (13th Dhul-Hijjah).

However, it is not the Sunnah [to do so] on the day of ‘Eed while the imaam is delivering the khutbah, because the person is required to listen to the khutbah.

As for the congregational takbeer – with one [collective] voice, then this is not from the Sunnah, rather, everyone should do the takbeer individually for himself.

It is the Sunnah for men to utter this takbeer loudly, as for women, they should not utter it loudly – neither at home, nor in the market.

The woman should not utter it loudly, however, if she is in her home and it is more inspiriting for her to utter it loudly, then there is no harm [in her doing so].
