Teaching precedes disciplining

Sharh Buloogh al-Maraam v2 p218

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:

Many people are overcome with protective jealousy (الغَيْرَة) to start with disciplining before teaching!

So, if he finds his son has abandoned the congregational prayer for example, or abandoned what was not befitting [for him] to have abandoned, he promptly smacks him!

And this is contrary to wisdom. Rather, teach before you discipline.

So if you taught [your child], then [by doing so] you have established the proof [upon him], [and] then after that you [should] discipline.
