Ignorant of the ruling related to wiping over the socks

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape No.4, Question No.42

Question: A local man is ignorant of the ruling related to wiping over the socks, and [as a result] he used to wipe over the socks for a period of two complete days for a whole month. So what is the ruling regarding his prayers [during this period]?

Response: They are not correct, because the obligation of being in a state of wudhoo for every prayer is not overlooked because of forgetfulness. [As a rule], something which is obligatory is not overlooked because of forgetfulness, [rather] it is imperative that it be done. Being in a state of wudhoo is a condition for the validity of the prayer, and as such cannot be overlooked because of ignorance or forgetfulness. [That being the case] therefore, it is necessary that he repeat his prayers [during this period].
