Question: What is the ruling regarding [putting] eye drops and ointment/liniment in the eyes?

Response: There is no harm for one who fasts to apply kohl to his eyes and likewise eye drops and [also] ear drops even if he finds the taste of them [reach] his throat. This does not break his fast. This is because it is neither food or drink and nor does it constitute food or drink. Rather, the evidence prohibits eating and drinking, so that which does not constitute this cannot be regarded as such. What we have mentioned is the opinion of Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah and it is correct.
