Liqaa’aat al-Baab al-Maftooh – No.1307
Question: He is in the habit of visiting his relatives, and these relatives have some [things of a] reprehensible [nature] in their homes such as a satellite dish. Bearing in mind they know it is prohibited, should he then stop visiting them, or should he continue to visit them?
Response: If he has relatives, then it is obligatory that he maintain ties of kinship [with them], even if he is not pleased with how they are, because Allaah (Ta’aala) says:
And He did not say ‘kill them’, rather, he said:
And likewise, maintaining ties of kinship is obligatory, even if he is not pleased with how they are. So it is obligatory upon him to maintain [ties of kinship with them], even if they have a satellite dish. [Sadly] many people use [these satellite dishes] for prohibited purposes, and woefully waste their time and wealth over it, and as a result it has corrupted the character and mindset of many people. So if they use it for prohibited purposes whilst he is visiting them, then he must leave so he is not party to their sin.
And along with this, we advise everyone to fulfil the rights of their relatives by offering sincere advice [to them]. So they should go to them and advise them and clarify to them that this is prohibited – namely, watching prohibited content, and [by doing so] they have fulfilled what Allaah has obligated upon them in terms of offering sincere advice and [maintaining] good dealings with them.
