Customer forgot purchased items in shop

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape No.4, Question No.56

Question: A customer bought clothing in a shop, and after paying for it, he forgot to take them with him. A long time has now passed, and the customer has not returned to collect his purchased items, so what should the shopkeeper do with them?

Response: If he has lost hope of the customer returning [to pick up his clothes], then he must donate them to the poor and needy, with the intention the reward be for the customer who paid for them.
