Saying what the caller to prayer says

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape No.8, Question No.20

Question: When the mu.adhdhin says:

« الصلاة خير من النوم »

…should the one who hears [the adhaan] say:

« لا حول و لا قوة إلاّ بالله »

…or what should he respond with?

Response: The correct [opinion] is that he should say:

« الصلاة خير من النوم »

…just as the mu.adhdhin says; this is based upon the generality of his ﷺ saying:

«When you hear the mu.adhdhin, say what he says»

…and the only exception is when he says:

« حي على الصلاة »

…and:

« حي على الفلاح »

As for the rest [of the adhaan], then he should say what the mu.adhdhin says.
