Wearing a ring

Question: O noble Shaykh, what is the correct approach to wearing a ring?

Response: As for the issue of wearing a ring, then it is not a Sunnah which is required [of us to emulate] – whereby everyone is required to wear a ring. However, if a need arises for wearing one, then it is from the guidance of the Messenger ﷺ to wear one. That is because when the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ was told that the kings [and rulers] of his time do not accept any letters without a seal (stamp), he then took to wearing a ring in order to stamp the letters which he sent to them[1]. So whoever is in need of [something like] that – such as a leader or a judge or other than them, then his taking to wearing a ring would be in accordance to [the guidance of] the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ; and whoever does not have a need for doing so, then it is not from the Sunnah for him to wear a ring.
