Question: What are the causes which assist in purifying [one’s] sincerity [in worshiping Allaah alone], and likewise [one’s] firmness upon [practising] the religion?
Response: [From] the causes that assist are:
- strength of eemaan;
- an increase in the remembrance of Allaah;
- reciting the Qur.aan, and
- sitting in the gathering of the pious.
These are from the causes of reviving the hearts, and remembering Allaah ‘Azza wa Jall; [in addition to] abandoning idle amusement and negligence, and abandoning that which preoccupies you away from the remembrance of Allaah, [as Allaah ‘Azza wa Jall says]:
{…let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allaah. And whoever does that – then those are the losers}, soorah al-Munaafiqoon, aayah 9
