Question: Is a man’s conversation with a woman via social media considered seclusion?

Response: [I swear] by Allaah, it is worse than seclusion; [I swear] by Allaah [it is]!

Shaytaan has not found a way to prey on righteous people like this baneful means [of communication].

Communication on social media [whereby] a chaste woman approaches and communicates with a righteous man in good [things], and then Shaytaan drives a small stake of wood between them [to pin them together in communication]!

[And so] she begins to ask [questions] related to her religion, and he answers her.

She then complains [to him] about her husband, but he takes her mind off it, and then he appears to her in his answer as if he is the best of husbands – and Allaah has the Complete Knowledge about his [true] condition – and he makes her husband appear terrible in her eyes, and then the disaster ensues.

[I swear] by Allaah brothers! I am a [sincere] advisor to the believing men and believing women.

Let not any woman approach a man on social media; I mean a man who is not a mahram to her, even if he is a shaykh!

And if she is [genuinely] in need, then she should ask via her mahrams, or her husband.

And if the question cannot be resolved via her mahrams, then she should ask via the shaykh’s wife, so that communication takes place only in cases of genuine necessity where [all other] doors are closed [to her] in a matter of sheer necessity, and that she does so without being overly excessive with her words.

There is in these means [of communication] immense good, and great evil.

[So] the one who is successful, is the one who does good using them, and closes the doors of evil [whilst using them]; otherwise, [I swear] by Allaah, they are among the most evil steps [employed by] Shaytaan [to evil].

One should be very careful indeed not to be lenient in this matter.

May Allaah grant everyone success and accept from everyone [their righteous deeds], and Allaah The Almighty is Most High and All-Knowing, and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet.
