Speaking to one another on the phone prior to marriage

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape No.4, Question No.54

Question: If a man has proposed to a woman [by way of her walee], is it then permissible for him to speak to her on the telephone?

Response: Yes, he can speak to her about something important [and necessary], and not to joke and jest with her – something which will lead to them both being desirous of one another. There is no harm in him speaking to her about an important [and necessary] matter [related to their pending marriage].
