Emulating ash-Shaafi’ee during Ramadhaan

Abu Bakr ibn al-Haddaad said:

I took myself to [emulating] what ar-Rabee’ had narrated about ash-Shaafi’ee, that he would complete [reading] the Qur.aan sixty times during Ramadhaan, [and this was] other than what he would recite during the prayer.

So the most I was able to do was to complete [reading the Qur.aan] fifty nine times, and thirty times during other than Ramadhaan.

Translator’s note:
While from one angle this worship is something praiseworthy, it must be noted that adhering to the Sunnah takes precedence, as it has been authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ prohibited ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhumaa) from reading the entire Qur.aan in less than three days and nights, as he ﷺ said:

«Whoever reads the [entire] Qur.aan in less than three [days and nights] has not understood it» – Saheeh Abu Daawood, No.1394

And commenting on this, Shaykh al-Albaanee said:

“And what has been reported about some of the salaf [which is] in opposition to the authentic Sunnah does not contradict it, since it is apparent that it (the above narration) had not reached them.” – Silsilatul-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah – Volume 5, Page 601
