Distributing Zakaah in other than money

al-Liqaa ash-Shahree – v12, p41

Question: Is it permissible to convert the money [extracted] for the Zakaah to tangible food items and other than that, and then distribute [that instead] to the poor and needy?

Response: [That is] not permissible. It is imperative that it (Zakaah) be distributed as money…

Reference: Majmoo’ Fataawa wa Rasaa.il Ibn ‘Uthaymeen – v18, p303

Response: It is imperative the Zakaah of money be in money, and it is not to be extracted in any other form, unless the poor and needy [recipient] entrusted you by saying “if you receive any Zakaah [on my behalf], then buy such-and-such with it for me…” – then there is no harm [in doing so]…
