Narrating hadeeth and not adopting it

Reference: Siyar A’laam an-Nubalaa v10 p34

It was said to ash-Shaafi’ee رحمه الله:

‘Do you take this hadeeth O Abaa ‘Abdillaah?’

So he said: ‘When I narrate an authentic hadeeth on the authority of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ and do not adopt it, then I testify to you [all] that I have lost my mind.’
