Reading the Qur.aan whilst on menses or in a state of major sexual impurity

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape No.7, Question No.29

Question: Is it permissible for the menstruating woman and the one in the state of major sexual impurity to read the Qur.aan from memory without touching the Qur.aan?

Response: The menstruating woman should not read the Qur.aan, except in two situations – for which the scholars have issued a fatwa; and they are:

1) for the sake of an exam, which she would otherwise miss;
2) for when she fears she will forget what she has already memorised, so she needs to revise so she does not forget it.

And other than that, she must not read the Qur.aan until she completes her menses and has a bath [or shower].
