Question: I am a sick woman and was unable to fast some days during last Ramadhaan and have been unable to make up [the missed fasts] due to my illness. So what is the expiation for that? Likewise, I am unable to fast Ramadhaan this year, so what is the expiation for that also?

Response: One who is sick and experiences difficulty in fasting is permitted not to fast. And whenever Allaah cures him, he is required to make up [the missed fasts] as He (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) says:

{…and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe fasts) must be made up] from other days}, soorah al-Baqarah, aayah 185

And there is no harm in you not fasting [again] this year so long as you are still ill. That is because not fasting is a legislated ease from Allaah for the sick and the traveller, and Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) loves to provide ease just as He dislikes [people] committing sins. So you are not required to make up [the missed fasts] and may Allaah cure you of all sickness and expiate [all] our sins
