The reality of i’tikaaf

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

However, [regarding] i’tikaaf, its reality is for the person to remain in the masjid for [the purpose of] worshipping Allaah ‘Azza wa Jall.

Not for the purpose of people gathering together with one another, and chatting about that which is of no benefit; this is certainly not i’tikaaf!

I’tikaaf is to be inside the masjid to engage in the worship of Allaah ‘Azza wa Jall, from reciting the Qur.aan, remembrance, prayer, enjoining the good and forbidding the evil [and so on].

As for the people gathering together with one another, as we see in the masaajid, [where] they sit down [for a chat] as if they are in a coffee shop, or a recreation park.

However, there is no harm in a person chatting to his brothers now and again, [during] some [part] of the day.
