The importance of studying medicine

It was reported that al-Maaziree became ill, and was unable to find anyone to treat him except for a Jew; so when he recovered at his hands, the Jew said [to him]:

If it were not that I was engaged in protecting my skill and proficiency [in medicine], the Muslims would have perished.

And this had such a profound effect on al-Maaziree, that he began to study medicine until he excelled in it. And so [he reached such a level of proficiency that] he became of those who [were qualified to] issue professional opinion [in matters of medicine], just as he [was qualified to] issue legal opinion in matters of fiqh.

He is a graduate of the Islaamic University of Madeenah, having graduated from the Institute of Arabic Language, and later the Faculty of Sharee'ah in 2004. He currently resides in Birmingham, UK.
