I stole money from him when I was young

Reference: Fataawa Noor ‘alad-Darb – Question No.6278, Pages 110-111, Volume 12

Question: [When I was young], on many occasions I took money from [the pocket of] someone’s clothing – whilst in his house; by Allaah, I do not know exactly how much money I took. So when I was older, I repented to Allaah. I have [also] heard a hadeeth which severely warns against taking [someone’s] money like this, so please advise me [about what more I must do], and may Allaah protect and preserve you?

Response: You are required to repent to Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) for what you have done, in addition to contacting the owner of this money [you stole], and come to an agreement with him about how much you stole from him [in order to then pay him back]. So [go and] search for this man, and come to an agreement with him on any amount – small or large – [something by] which you will be relinquished of this responsibility [once you pay him back the agreed amount].
