Ibn al-Qayyim said:
Patience whilst upon obedience [to Allaah] is [the attainment of] a higher rank than patience whilst enduring trials and tribulations!
That is because patience whilst upon obedience [to Allaah] is a choice [one makes], whereas patience whilst enduring trials and tribulations is imposed (involuntary).
