Reading religious books whilst on her menses

Question: Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to read religious books and booklets which have some Qur.aanic verses in them? And what is the ruling if – whilst on her menses – she were to read from a mus.haf (copy of the Qur.aan) without touching it, and she was reading just by looking at it?

Response: There is no harm in a menstruating woman reading religious booklets and books – even if there are some verses of the Qur.aan on some of its pages. [That is] because her intention in reading [these books] is not to recite [the Qur.aan], rather, that which is intended is to read a book; and in shaa.-Allaah there is no harm in her coming across these verses [of the Qur.aan] whilst reading [these books].

And in [response to] her second question…then in shaa.-Allaah there is no harm in that; that she places the mus.haf [before her] and looks at it, and turns the pages over without directly touching it, and instead covers her hands with a clean garment or some material [before touching the mus.haf]. That is because the length of her menstruation period is generally long, and this is something beyond her control.
