It reached me that the Fire will not harm the area which has been touched by the tears [which flowed due to the fear of Allaah].

Two dark lines
There were two dark lines on the face of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab, due to weeping.
Reading the Qur.aan with understanding
O son of Aadam, by Allaah, if you were to read the Qur.aan [with understanding] and then believed in [what] it [contains], your sadness [at what comes to pass] in this world will be lengthened, and your fear [of Allaah] in this world will intensify, and your weeping in this world will increase.
Falling short
Indeed it is my falling short [of sufficient good deeds] that I weep over.
There was no day that anyone wept more than him
We arrived in ash-Shaam along with ‘Umar, and [when] Bilaal [ibn Rabaah] called the adhaan, the people remembered the Prophet ﷺ, and there was no day that anyone wept more than him (Bilaal).
Sleeping a little at night
al-Haafith ‘Abdul-Ghanee visited me in Asbahaan, and [whilst here] he would only sleep a little at night; instead [spending most of his time] praying and reciting [the Qur.aan] or weeping.
He would weep
If Sa’eed ibn Abdil-Azeez [ever] missed the congregational prayer, he would weep.
Never once saw him praying a voluntary prayer
I accompanied Muhammad ibn Aslam for more than 20 years, and never once saw him praying a voluntary prayer except on the day of Jumu’ah; [I understood why, when] I once heard him saying: ‘If I was able to pray a voluntary prayer such that my two angels could not see me, I would have done so – out of fear of showing off’.
If anyone did speak to him, he would respond to them
al-Awzaa’ee would not speak to anyone after the fajr prayer until [after] he had engaged himself in the remembrance of Allaah; And if anyone did speak to him, he would respond to them.
