Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan said:

So the Muslim must always be a servant of Allaah and not a servant of Allaah [just] some of the time.

And when Allaah knows that a servant will return to sin after Ramadhaan, then He will not accept his deeds [done] during Ramadhaan.

That is because a temporary repentance is not accepted by Allaah.

So from the conditions of repentance is that he resolves not to return to sins and transgression ever again.

Some of the Salaf used to say after the month of Ramadhaan:

“If only I knew who from amongst us [had his deeds] accepted, so we can congratulate him, and who [had his deeds] rejected, so we can condole him.”

[So] O who had his deeds accepted, congratulations be to you!

And O who had his deeds rejected, may Allaah bless you with consolation.

And what protects us – O servants of Allaah – from being among those who [had their deeds] rejected?

Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall) said about the best of His closest servants:

{Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear…} – al-Anbiyaa:90
{Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.} – al-Anbiyaa:90

He (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) said:

{And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord} – al-Mu.minoon:60
{It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.} – al-Mu.minoon:61

Umm al-Mu.mineen ‘Aa.ishah (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhaa) said:

“O Messenger of Allaah, are they the ones who commit adultery, steal, and drink alcohol?”

He said:

«No, O daughter of as-Siddeeq. Rather, they are those who pray, and give charity, and fast – and [yet] they fear that their deeds will be rejected.» – at-Tirmidhee, no.3175

And despite our sins, we feel safe from the punishment of Allaah, and despite their good, they were afraid of [their deeds] not being accepted.

[O] servants of Allaah!

Indeed from the sign that a good deed is accepted [by Allaah] is [yet] a[nother] good deed after it.

So if you want to know whether the month of Ramadhaan has been accepted from you, then look at your state after it.

So if you are in a better state after Ramadhaan than you were before it – [where] your state has changed for the better – then know that your [deeds have been] accepted by Allaah (‘Azza wa Jall).

And if you are the opposite of that, then know that your [deeds have been] rejected [by Allaah]! Know that your [deeds have been] rejected [by Allaah], but do not despair of the Mercy of Allaah, and do not despair of the soothing Mercy of Allaah. So repent to Allaah, and Allaah accepts the repentance from His servants, and pardons sins, and knows [well] what you do.

And if you commit a sin, then follow it up with a good deed.

He ﷺ said:

«…and follow-up a bad deed with a good deed, as it will wipe it out.» – at-Tirmidhee, no.1987 and ad-Daarimee, no.2705
