Why do you fast [today], yet do not fast when you are also travelling in Ramadhaan?
Daawood ibn Abee Hind fasted for forty years, and his family were not aware of it. He was very discrete, and would take his [packed] lunch with him, and then give it away [to someone needy] along the way.
If we were with the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on a journey, on a [particularly] hot day – none of us would be fasting except the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and ‘Abdullaah ibn Rawaahah.
Regarding ‘Alee ibn al-Ja’d [it was said that] for the last sixty years, he has been fasting every other day.
Hammaad ibn Abee Sulaymaan would feed five hundred people during Ramadhaan, and after ‘Eed [al-Fitr] he would give 100 dirhams to each one.
